Recovering from Burnout

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion that results from the build-up of chronic, unmanaged stress over time. It’s not just about being tired; it’s a deeper condition that can impact overall well-being and can sometimes mimic symptoms of depression and anxiety. It can stem from workplace stress, but also from the demands of caregiving, or other roles.

What Causes Burnout?

  • Chronic Stress: Prolonged exposure to stressful situations, whether from work or other life demands, is a primary cause of burnout. When the stress bucket is always full, a person may function at a lower level, and small things can set them off.
  • Lack of Self-Care: When individuals don’t take care of their basic needs, like diet, sleep, and exercise, they may be more susceptible to burnout. Neglecting personal well-being can create a vicious cycle of increasing stress and fatigue.
  • Imbalance: A lack of balance between home and work life can lead to burnout. When there is no space between responsibilities and home life, this can lead to stress.
  • Unrealistic Expectations: Feeling unable to meet the expectations of others, or one’s own self-imposed standards, can lead to feelings of failure and increased stress, contributing to burnout. Perfectionism can contribute to this.
  • Over-Commitment: Taking on too much, or an inability to say no, can lead to an overload of responsibilities and burnout.
  • Avoidance: Avoiding work, or detaching from issues, can also lead to burnout because underlying anxiety festers and creates an inability to be productive.
  • Loss of Purpose: When people do not feel a sense of purpose or meaning in their life, they may be less willing to engage in difficult situations, and they may lose motivation and become burned out.

How an Anxiety Coach Can Help

An anxiety coach can provide support, guidance, and tools to help individuals navigate and overcome burnout. Coaching focuses on building resilience and developing practical skills and strategies for managing stress and anxiety. They can work with a client to:

  • Identify Burnout Triggers: An anxiety coach will work with clients to identify the specific situations, thoughts, or behaviours that lead to stress and burnout.
  • Promote Self-Awareness: Through coaching, clients can become more aware of their triggers, symptoms, and patterns that contribute to burnout.
  • Develop Coping Strategies: An anxiety coach can teach techniques to manage stress, such as mindfulness, relaxation techniques, and deep breathing. They may also suggest physical activity or journaling.
  • Improve Time Management: A coach can help clients to develop better time management and planning skills, breaking tasks down into manageable steps.
  • Set Boundaries: Learning to set boundaries and communicate effectively can help individuals reduce their workloads. An anxiety coach can help a client to be more assertive.
  • Address Avoidance: An anxiety coach can help clients to identify patterns of avoidance, and challenge unhelpful beliefs.
  • Prioritise Values and Meaning: A coach can help a client to focus on what is truly important in their lives, and to realign their activities in line with their values.
  • Build Resilience: Coaches can help clients build their capacity to handle stress and adversity.
  • Promote Self-Care: An anxiety coach can help people understand the importance of, and make time for self-care, including rest and relaxation.
  • Channel Energy: A coach can help clients to channel their emotions and energy into something productive. They can work with clients to shift their perception of anxiety as excitement that needs an attitude adjustment.
  • Provide Support: A coach can provide a supportive and non-judgmental space where clients can express their feelings and concerns.

Additional Approaches

  • Mindfulness: Using mindfulness techniques can help clients to observe their thoughts and feelings without judgment.
  • Self-Havening: Clients may be taught self-havening techniques to manage their own distress in the moment.
  • Action Planning: Clients can work with a coach to create specific action plans that will lead to better management of their time and resources.
  • Empathy: An anxiety coach who is able to empathise with a client, can create a helpful relationship that allows a client to accept that change involves both progress and setbacks.
  • Gratitude: Cultivating an attitude of gratitude can help individuals to feel more positive.

Burnout is caused by chronic stress, lack of self-care, and an imbalance between responsibilities and rest. It can also stem from over-commitment, unrealistic expectations, and a lack of purpose. An anxiety coach can assist individuals in recovering from burnout by helping them identify triggers, develop coping mechanisms, and build resilience, as well as to re-evaluate their values and priorities. They can help clients to make space for rest and self-care and to learn to balance their responsibilities with their need for relaxation, while also addressing any patterns of avoidance.
